July 2 - Samantha, a pretty black lab mix, was abandoned and left to fend for herself.  Castaways was notified of her situation and stepped in to help her.  She is the sweetest, most mild-mannered girl!  She is calm, doesn't jump or bark and is just the best dog!  She has some patches of hair that are missing and she has a veterinary appointment for July 3rd to get a diagnosis and treatment for those places missing hair.  Although Samantha is not thin, it is obvious that she has been terribly neglected in her life.  It amazes me how sweet she is despite the fact that she has been ignored and ill cared for!  She is so calm that I can't help but to think that she would be a great family pet!  Nothing seems to phase her!  I will continue to put postings on her site as to her progress and diagnosis.  I should also get a better determination of her age tomorrow as well.  In the meantime, won't you consider making Samantha part of YOUR family?? Please go on line and fill out an application to make her a member of your household!!

July 7 - Samantha continues to amaze us!  She is SO low-key and gentle!  Her skin is healing up SO nicely!  Samantha's veterinary appointment revealed that she does not have mites or scabies or mange.  She just was not taken care of and her skin and coat were in poor condition.  But all that is changing!  She will make some family a very nice pet!  She walks so nicely on a leash, is great in the car (does not whine, cry, bark at all!) and she just has the most lovely personality!  Don't miss out on this wonderful dog!

July 11th - Well, Samantha is truly a wonder!  She is just the most mellow girl ever!  She is not phased by anything (even a 12 week-old, 3 1/2 pound puppy running after her wanting to play with her)!  She is already growing back some of her hair and has learned the ropes here quite fast!  She is 100% house/pad trained.  She has not had ONE accident in this house since I brought her here!  She takes treats so nicely and is very gentle.  She has taken to sleeping with me and once she circles twice and finds her spot next to me, she is out for the night!  We just love her!  Samantha is a pleasure to have in this house ... and just today my daughter texted me that we had better find her a home soon, as she is already "falling for" her!  And you will, too!  :):):)

Forgot to mention ... I have been "pressing" the vet to try to figure out Samantha's mix of breeds and she finally said, "Well, the only thing I'm certain of is that she is part black Lab.  Other than that, I would say that she is probably the most perfect example of a Heinz 57 dog I've ever seen!"  So there you have it!  :)

September 2 - Samantha was diagnosed with a back issue and recently had surgery on her back to correct some pressure that she was experiencing on a few of her vertebrae.  She came through the surgery with flying colors and the vet said that dogs recover extremely well from this procedure.  He projected a 100% recovery and that is what we have experienced.  She is running and jumping in the yard, playing with all the other dogs and just enjoying the good life.  She is a wonderful, gentle girl and we are thrilled to be fostering her.  Sammie is a great dog!!!  We truly feel honored to be in a position to be part of her recovery and success story!

Sept. 29 - Sammie is a continual pleasure to have in our home.  She tolerates everything that comes and goes ... all the other rescues, the people ... she is unwaivering!  She asks for very little ... comes when called, loves to go outside in the morning with all the other dogs and sniff around the yard!  She remains steadfast in using puppy pads if left alone for more than 8 hours.  She has never gone off the pad when she goes in the house.  She has her special places where she likes to sleep and curls up on her own where she rests during the day.  As soon as we turn the lights out, she knows that it's bed time and she comes into the bedroom where I have a baby crib mattress on the floor by my bed.  She loves to sleep close to me!  Every now and again she will climb up the doggie steps and get in bed with me!  She is very low maintenance and just a lovely girl to foster!

February 11, 2013 - Well, Sammie is in her first winter with us and although she does get a bit stiff from time to time, we give her a pain med if and when needed and she responds famously!  She still has her favorite corner in which she loves to sleep (about a dozen pillows on the floor suits her best!) and she sleeps in the bedroom on a big doggie bed next to my bed now.  She is very routine oriented and knows all the signs that it is bed time, that you are leaving to go out, or that it's just "chill time" in the living room.  She comes when called and knows her name.  She is a sweet older girl who has a lot of charm!  Won't you consider allowing Sammie to come and live with you?
